In a way the 5Rhythms lead us to Stillness. The whole dancing practice encourages us to dissolve our boundaries, let go of false securities and simply show up to the present moment with no agenda other than to be here now. For many of us stillness is the quiet space where we arrive after we rock our bodies and sweat our prayers. Yes, stillness is a place of integration and ending, but it can be so much more. If we allow ourselves to fall through the cracks and enter the space between, a vast terrain appears. In the space between our thoughts awaits our bigger mind and in the space between effort and collapse there is grace.
Diving into the territory of stillness can bring healing, insight and inspiration. Looking deeply in the mirror of our soul can also be confronting and unsettling. We’ll therefore work on building safe space and nourish the wisdom to go as far as we can go. This workshop is an invitation to go on a journey or to quote Captain Kirk: to explore strange new worlds, … , to boldly go where no (wo)man has gone before.
The 5Rhythms is a movement practice with 5 distinct phases that together form a wave of energy. In this workshop we’ll look at each rhythm from the perspective of the 5th rhythm stillness. This doesn’t always entails moving quietly and meditatively. It also means we have to buckle up for and intense ride and practice softening up in the face of challenge (flowing); finding a supporting pulse (staccato); dissolving things that hold us back (chaos); and stretching our imagination into the unfamiliar (lyrical).

The 5Rhythms is a dynamic movement practice where we both meditate and rock our bodies in the same breath. It has 5 phases or rhythms that take dancers on a journey of tuning in (flowing), expressing (staccato), surrendering (chaos), expanding (lyrical) and being (stillness). Anyone, regardless of age or physical condition, can dance the 5Rhythms. You only need a body that breathes, a heart that beats and a willingness to be curious.
Léon Beckx is a certified 5Rhythms movement facilitator and has been teaching the 5Rhythms since 2008.
